MYSTERY SOLVED: IT'S ZOYSIA!
We
didn't have the answer at Pridefest when so many people came to our
booth inquiring about what type of grass they were sitting and
walking on in Jaco Pastorius Park. We went to an expert on the
subject, Charlie Livio, Arborist for the City of Oakland Park. Here
is what he shared with us:
"The turf grass at Jaco Pastorius park is Zoysia 'UltimateFlora'. It was developed by the University of Florida. Some of its positive features are that it uses less water and fertilizer than St. Augustine turf, resists chinch bugs, tolerates high foot traffic, and has the lush northern lawn look (narrow leaf blades). The only negative feature we have found is that it goes dormant (brown) in the winter. Yes, even in our mild winters. If you remember or noticed the field at Jaco Pastorius Park was brown the winter of 2009. For this winter season we overseeded the Zoysia turf with annual rye grass,( a temporary cool season grass) the first week of December 2009. The results were a beautiful lush northern type lawn all winter. The annual rye grass dies out in the heat of April,just as the Zoysia is starting to grow and green up."
